New analysis from consumer champion Which? has once again named Aldi as the UK’s cheapest supermarket for October 2026, based on a basket of 87 popular grocery items[2].
Even after loyalty discounts were applied, shoppers would still have paid £27.43 more at Tesco (priced £181.77) and £28.56 more at Sainsbury’s (priced £182.90). Morrisons was £32.43 more expensive at £186.77, while Waitrose was a whopping £61.53 more, with the same basket costing £215.87.
The result continues Aldi’s winning run in 2026, having topped the Which? rankings for a whole year – building on its recognition as Cheapest Supermarket of the Year for 2025[3]. The retailer was also named Which?’s ‘Best Value Brand of the Year’, recognised for consistently delivering strong quality at low prices[4].
With the average UK household expected to spend more than £700 on the upcoming Christmas festivities[5], switching from Waitrose to Aldi could help savvy shoppers take the pressure off of the season’s budget.
The £61.53 saving is enough to cover a festive haul worth £60.59, meaning shoppers can stock up on Christmas essentials without breaking the bank. Available in stores now, savvy switchers looking for low cost gifts could pick up the highly coveted 12 Days of Lacura Advent Calendar (£19.99) and Wood Holiday Icon Candle (£12.99, 910g).
For festive food and drink, the same haul includes Baron Amarillo Cava Brut (£5.59, 75cl), Gingerbread Mulled Wine (£3.49, 75cl) and Ravini Amaretto (£8.79, 70cl), plus Aldi’s award-winning Specially Selected All Butter Mince Pies (£1.75, six-pack)[6] and Specially Selected 24-Month Matured Christmas Pudding (£7.99, 800g)[7].
Whether Brits are getting a head start on their Christmas shopping, looking for early gifts, or stocking up the drink cabinets ahead of the December rush – swapping the weekly shop to Aldi makes preparing for the big day a little less daunting.
Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, said: “We are thrilled to be crowned the UK’s cheapest supermarket for a full year. We know that the festive season can be an expensive time of year, which is why so many families are starting their preparations early to help spread the cost. As we head into the Christmas festivities, we are proud to be able to deliver standout quality at affordable prices and help our customers save towards making this time of year extra special.”
