As well as deadline day, Tuesday night saw a plethora of matches take place across all three divisions of the EFL.
In the Championship, Swansea City were the big winners as they breezed past Watford 2-0 at home. Eom Jisung and Adam Idah both scored in the first half, assisting each other for their respective goals. They comfortably saw off the visitors to inflict a first league defeat on new Hornets’ boss Alessio Dionisi. The result sees Swansea go top with 10 points from their opening four games.
Stoke City climbed off the bottom of the table as they sealed their first win of the season, a 1-0 home success against Norwich. Ethan Galbraith’s long-range effort in the first half was the difference between the two sides. Other teams that landed their first wins were Sheffield United and West Ham, with both involved in goal-drenched affairs. The Blades edged a five-goal thriller at home to Bolton, against whom they trailed 1-0 and 2-1. They restored parity twice before Romelle Donovan popped up with a priceless stoppage time winner.
As for the Hammers, they finally landed a first victory at home to fellow relegated side Wolves as they ran out 4-2 winners with Divine Mukasa notching a brace, Jarrod Bowen scoring a penalty and Konstantinos Mavropanos adding gloss. Derby County also picked up their maiden three-point haul with an impressive 2-0 win at Portsmouth.
Preston’s struggles continue and they remain the only second tier side without a point after a 3-1 defeat at home to Bristol City. Elsewhere, there was a 1-1 draw between Birmingham and Southampton whilst Lincoln and Blackburn played out a goalless affair.
In League One, Huddersfield Town went top of the table after a dramatic ending to their home game with Oxford. The game was void of much action for the first half before it burst into life just before the hour mark, with Joe Taylor’s brace contributing to a 3-1 win.
Just behind them in the table are Sheffield Wednesday, who sealed a third win from four league games thanks to a come-from-behind 2-1 success at Wycombe. Cauley Woodrow put Wycombe in to an early lead before Louie Barry levelled and then Jamal Lowe propelled the Owls in front right on half-time from the penalty spot. The second half stayed goalless as Wednesday held on.
Leyton Orient inflicted more pain on Bromley as they dished out a 5-0 spanking away from home. Jaze Kabia and Yusuf Akhamrich both hit braces as Bromley – battered 7-2 by Wednesday last weekend – lost in the league at home for the first time since way back in March 2025.
Leicester City picked up a much-needed win, overcoming Plymouth 2-0 at home with both goals being scored in first half stoppage time, whilst Cambridge sealed an impressive 2-1 win at Bradford City to continue their solid start to life back in the third tier. Elsewhere, there was a 0-0 stalemate between Peterborough and Stevenage whilst Doncaster and Notts County played out a 1-1 draw.
In League Two, Bristol Rovers moved to the top of the table after a routine 2-0 home win over Colchester United thanks to goals in each half from Tom James and Ellis Harrison. Crewe and Walsall remain two of the unbeaten sides in League Two, after playing out an entertaining 2-2 draw with Reece Hutchinson scoring a stoppage time leveller for the Alex.
Salford City finally got their first win of the season as they left it late to come from behind to beat Newport 2-1, goals from Taylor Allen and Kelly N’Mai earning a first three points for the bookies’ favourites.
Tuesday also saw Cheltenham win 3-2 against York, Rochdale triumph 3-0 over Shrewsbury for their first win back in the EFL and Swindon overcome Port Vale 3-1.
There was also six other draws. Accrington and Grimsby, and Tranmere and Rotherham played out entertaining 2-2 affairs, whilst the matches pitting Chesterfield against Gillingham, Exeter against Barnet, Fleetwood against Oldham and Northampton against Crawley, all ended 1-1.
