Welsh designed Island Pellet Stoves could provide the ideal heating solution for UK homes, costing less than most traditional heat sources and having minimal environmental impact.
With geopolitical events affecting the price of gas and electricity, together with serious environmental concerns associated with these energy sources, there has never been a better time to consider what other heating methods are available.
Wood burners that combine effective heat production with the primeval appeal of naked flame have long been a popular option, however, even traditional log burning stoves are now under scrutiny for their environmental and health impacts due to the particulate emissions they produce.
In contrast, Island Pellet Stoves burn wood pellets made from sawdust which is a waste product of the timber industry. These pellets, when burned produce virtually no ash or smoke due to the absence of bark but still provide heat and the natural naked flame so sought after by homeowners. In a 2025 report commissioned by DEFRA called ‘Emission Factors for Domestic Solid Fuels,’ Island Pellet Stoves were proven to be around 20 times cleaner than a modern log burner for emission of particulates.
Wood Pellet Stoves are popular in Europe, but Cardiff based, Island Pellet Stoves are the only company in the UK to design and build their own British version. The brainchild of two engineering friends, Marc Howell and Dr. Gabriel Gallagher (both of whom attended Cardiff University), the stoves have been designed to make Island Pellet Stoves superior to others imported from abroad, with a patented balanced flue, smooth and silent pellet dispense and a real flickering flame that doesn’t look like a Bunsen burner. Where possible, all parts are sourced and precision manufactured in the UK, including the carcasses made from British steel, with the final construction of each stove lovingly done by hand in the company’s factory in Cardiff.
Island Pellet Stoves are a clean, easy to control, efficient and sustainable source of heat for the home. The patented balanced flue that controls the outflow of fumes and inflow of air means the stoves can be installed in all types of properties with or without a chimney including conservatories, boats or even yurts.
All Island Pellet Stoves are computer-controlled via a handheld remote or wall-mounted thermostat. It automatically lights the wood pellets and controls the feeding of them from a hopper at the top, with precise levels of pre-heated air, to allow greater control of the burning process, thereby significantly reducing emissions and increasing overall efficiency.
Island Pellet Stoves on average will use a third to half as much fuel as a log burner because their usage is temperature controlled. When the computer senses the desired temperature has been reached it slows or stops the flow of pellets accordingly to maintain that level of heat. In contrast, a log burner to which wood is added until it is hot enough cannot be turned down and often a window must be opened to cool the room, wasting heat. In addition, each time the door is opened to add a log, smoke and pollution are emitted into the room.
Energy prices remain highly volatile but while an Island Pellet Stove may require an initial investment (from £5,680 to £7,250 including vat depending on the model) in the long term they offer considerable savings.
Based on figures published in March 2026 and updated monthly by the Nottingham Energy Partnership (a charity that seeks to improve the energy efficiency of homes throughout Nottinghamshire), wood pellets bought in bags (£383 per tonne) cost about 8.8p per kWh. For many households, this can mean a much lower heating bill over the year. Compare this to “Big Energy” prices:
- LPG: 38.1p per kWh
Electric Heating: 30.5p per kWh
- Heating Oil: 16.5p per kWh
Wood pellets are 50% to 75% cheaper than these fuels. They are also 15% cheaper than logs (10.4p per kWh). Because these pellets help reduce your heating bill, and since they are made from forestry waste, prices stay low and stable. Plus, on average Island Pellet Stoves will use a third to half as much fuel as a log burner because their usage is temperature controlled.
Island Pellet Stoves makes three designs of stove: the Lundy 8 Boiler Stove which incorporates a novel compact on-board high efficiency boiler design that provides room heating through its large glass flame window and also has connections to a hot water circuit, the SKYE specifically designed to fit into traditional recessed British fireplaces and inglenooks and the Ramsey a more slimline design for use in freestanding locations where there is no chimney. All three are made from black British steel and stylishly blend contemporary with tradition, and, unlike other European pellet stoves they are silent, except for the gentle crackle of the flames – no loud fans and no grating as pellets fall into the fire. Ordering and installation is simple too with all interaction, until the final installation, being done remotely. All that is required is a photo and rough measurements of where the stove is to be placed, and a picture of the roof so that the experts at Island Pellet Stoves can assess the length of the flue required. On installation, any miscalculation or unexpected necessary building work is absorbed by Island Pellet Stoves, not passed onto the customer.
The government has recently announced new proposals to cut the limit on smoke emissions and make log burning stoves carry a health warning along the lines of: “Please be aware that this appliance emits air pollution into and around your home which can harm your health.” Any log burners installed pre-2018 could fall foul of the new proposals so many owners may need to rethink their heating source.
The team at Island Pellet Stoves are so confident that their products not only offer the best design in wood stoves but also the best in terms of emissions that they are introducing a ‘Stove Upgrade Scheme’ whereby anyone looking to replace an existing stove or open fire, or displace their gas/oil boiler usage would be offered a grant of up to £999* (*dependent on model purchased) to upgrade to one of their clean-burning, renewable energy stoves.
Island Pellet Stoves not only offer an eco-friendly alternative but also promise unparalleled controllable warmth and comfort. This sustainable heating solution is not just a worthwhile home investment but also contributes significantly to a greener, more environmentally conscious future and is proudly made in Wales.
