Young athletes of the future got a taste of life on the track when Commonwealth Games athlete and European medallist Josh Faulds hosted two action-packed athletics masterclasses at Coldhams Common on Sunday.
Children from across Cambridge learned movement skills, speed drills and hurdle techniques from the 400-metre hurdler during the fun sessions on the grass pitches, which Better run on behalf of Cambridge City Council, with plenty of encouragement from Josh.
The masterclasses formed part of Better’s Team England National Sports Weekend, a celebration inspired by the 2026 Commonwealth Games and delivered in partnership with Team England to encourage more people to discover a new sport and enjoy being active.
Across Cambridgeshire, Abbey Leisure Complex, Cherry Hinton Village Leisure Centre, Parkside Pools and Gym, Jesus Green Lido and The Hive in Ely opened their doors for a packed programme of free activities for all ages.
From beginner swimming lessons and gym taster sessions to fitness classes, family activities and outdoor challenges, local residents took the opportunity to try something new, build confidence and experience everything their local Better leisure centre has to offer.
Josh Faulds said:Â “I really enjoyed working with the children at Abbey Leisure Complex. They were enthusiastic, keen to learn and gave everything a go. It was great to see their confidence grow during the sessions, and hopefully I’ve inspired a few of them to keep enjoying athletics. Who knows, there could even be a future Commonwealth athlete among them.”
Louis Green, Community Sport Manager for Better in Cambridgeshire, said: “It was fantastic to see so many children and families getting involved throughout the weekend. Josh was brilliant with the children, sharing his skills and enthusiasm while showing that athletics is something everyone can enjoy, whatever their ability.
“Seeing so many people trying new activities and having fun together is exactly what Team England National Sports Weekend is all about. We hope everyone who joined us felt inspired to stay active and continue their sporting journey at their local Better leisure centre.”
