Three new Master’s courses will be available at the University of Suffolk this autumn, to help address the skills needs in key industries.

From September, postgraduate students will be able to study on the MA Social Work, MSc Digital Marketing and Data Analytics and MSc Cognitive Behavioural Therapy courses, with applications open now.

The courses aim to help meet the skills needs in these sectors by offering a continued learning route beyond undergraduate study.

The MA Social Work course builds on the University’s existing BA (Hons) Social Work degree and degree apprenticeship programmes, and combines academic study with hands-on professional placements of between 70 and 100 days.

The course, delivered over two years full time, offers a progression opportunity for those who have studied on the undergraduate course, as well as those already working in the health and social care sector or those looking to change career.

Graduates of the course will also be eligible to apply for registration with Social Work England.

Dr Kwabena Frimpong-Manso, Course Leader for MA Social Work, said: “Our course mixes theoretical study with plenty of practical opportunities for our students to put key skills into practice, ensuring they will be industry-ready on graduation.

“We know there continues to be a need for social workers in the sector, and consistent with other healthcare professions where we have been developing the future workforce, our Social Work programmes will help meet this industry need.”

The MSc Digital Marketing and Data Analytics course will develop advanced knowledge and practical expertise across data analytics, social media management, content creation and digital marketing strategies.

The one-year full-time Master’s course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Data and Marketing Association, and each module will be delivered over one weekday evening per week plus two weekend days, helping students balance study with existing work, study or caring commitments.

Claire Maddy, Course Leader in MSc Digital Marketing and Data Analytics, said: “Employers are increasingly seeking graduates who can work confidently with analytics, AI and modelling, so our course has been designed to ensure our students have the technical understanding and practical skills to fulfil these needs.

“The design of the course beyond the traditional Monday-to-Friday format will also ensure our learners can study for a postgraduate degree without having to press pause on existing work or parenting commitments.”

The MSc Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) course, which is an evolution of the MSc Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Counselling programme and will be offered part-time over two years, will teach students the key principles and theory of CBT practice, developing therapeutic skills, and identifying treatment goals, among other key skills.

Cindy Cassidy, Deputy Course Leader for MSc Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, said: “The demand in the UK for cognitive behavioural therapy remains consistently high, and is an important tool in both private and NHS talking therapies.

“Our course will ensure we play a significant role in meeting the workforce needs of this sector, preparing the future professionals who will deliver these vital therapies to our communities.”

In addition to these courses, the University is also launching a new four-year Master of Pharmacy degree from September, which features an integrated Master’s.

Development is currently underway on the facilities for the course, which includes a mock dispensary and clinical skills suite, as well as new labs.

The course will help meet the skills needs for pharmacists in the region, and equip students with the knowledge, skills and behaviours for a career in pharmacy, including skills in clinical reasoning, digital pharmacy and patient-centred care.
