Saturday saw Swansea City move level on points with the Hammers, as they swept past struggling Burnley 3-1 at home. The comfortable win sent Burnley bottom of the table, as their winless start continued. Also on 14 points is West Bromwich, who were held to a 1-1 draw at home to QPR.
Preston North End’s 1-0 home defeat to Lincoln was a costly one for manager Paul Heckingbottom, who was relieved of his duties on Sunday after more than two years in charge. The Lilywhites have lost six of their opening seven games so far this season.
There was a barnstorming game at the Riverside, as Middlesbrough came out on top 4-3 against Norwich City with Ashley Phillips scoring an injury time winner. Southampton’s fine form continued as they romped to a 4-1 home win over Bristol City whilst Stoke City’s resurgence shows no sign of stopping as they beat Watford 2-1 away from home.
Elsewhere, there were wins for Wolves, Bolton, Birmingham and Blackburn whilst the game between Charlton and Portsmouth ended 0-0.
In League One, Leicester City rectified their poor form as they eventually came out on top in a barnstorming game away at Stockport County. The Foxes won 4-3 but can count themselves lucky to have escaped with all three points, given that they almost blew a 4-1 lead. The Hatters got it back to 4-3 and then had not one but two goals chalked off as Russell Martin breathed a huge sigh of relief.
Managerless Wycombe won 3-2 away at Leyton Orient in another entertaining third tier clash, as they sealed a first victory of the season.
Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield remain first and second in the table, despite both drawing 0-0 against Wigan and Mansfield respectively. A clutch of teams below the top two all won, with Cambridge, Oxford, Plymouth and Wimbledon all securing home wins whilst Bradford sealed a 1-0 win away at Notts County to stay third.
There were draws in the games between Blackpool and Bromley (2-2) and MK Dons and Peterborough (1-1). Stevenage beat Luton 2-1 in the Thursday night clash.
There are new leaders in League Two, with Barnet going top thanks to Charlie Lakin’s brace in a 2-1 win as they came from behind to beat Accrington Stanley.
Bristol Rovers dropped down to second after they lost 2-0 away at Grimsby Town, whilst newly-promoted York City are up to third after romping to a 4-0 home win over Swindon Town with Alex Newby notching a brace.
There was an end-to-end game at Rotherham, as they played out a 3-3 draw with Salford. The visitors went 2-0 up before a terrific turnaround saw the Millers go 3-2 up. The visitors were then reduced to ten men but got a share of the spoils thanks to Macaulay Langstaff’s penalty.
Port Vale got their first win of the season, a slender 1-0 win over Exeter. Elsewhere, Cheltenham Town picked up an impressive 3-1 win at Crawley, whilst Shrewsbury beat Northampton Town 2-0.
There were also wins for Chesterfield and Gillingham whilst there were stalemates between Colchester and Crewe, Newport and Fleetwood and Walsall and Rochdale.
